This week’s Music Monday entry will showcase Chicago-based, genre-fusing band Sidewalk Chalk with their track “There She Goes”. Check it out!
This song, first released as a single, is from the group’s second album “Leaves”. Sidewalk Chalk is a 7 piece blend of hip-hop, jazz, funk, and soul and is nothing short of a party. I’ve been a fan of their music every since I listened to their first album back in late 2013. I found myself getting drawn to their music from the rich color and varied textures found in their song structures. As a trumpet player I always appreciate when any band incorporates the sounds of brass. Smooth horn lines dance behind the narrative, hip-hop flow of Sidewalk Chalk’s emcee Rico Sisney while the chorus’s samba-esque flare will make sitting still seem like an impossible task. The haunting, yet sultry vocal lines of female singer Maggie Vagle ride the tight grooves and invites the ear deeper into the composition. A genre-mixing sampler of different feels all wonderfully help to create an expressive wave of music thats both fresh and familiar.
The best part is all this and more is demonstrated each time the group hits the stage. I’ve seen Sidewalk Chalk live more than any other band and their sets never fail to get me dancing. It was hard to choose just one Sidewalk Chalk track to talk about so I recommend diving into their entire catalogue. Happy listening!
