Bouquet Toss: Songs for This Wedding Tradition

A wedding comes with a lot of traditions that modern couples are either skipping or putting their own spin on them. These traditions can be nice, fun additions to your wedding or they may not fit your personality as a couple. A bouquet toss is one of those traditions that many couples and brides have questions about.

The tradition was started when people believed stealing an item from the bride would bring them good luck. They would take her accessories or tear pieces of fabric from her dress and veil. A very strange way to congratulate a newlywed!

If you do want to have a bouquet toss at your wedding, there are a few things to consider.

1. HOW MANY SINGLE GUESTS WILL YOU HAVE AT THE WEDDING?

A bouquet toss is intended to get all unmarried women out on the dance floor to see who will be the next one to get married. However, think about your guests and how many of your friends will be single at the wedding. It can be very awkward if you only have one or two ladies trying to catch the bouquet. If there isn’t going to be much of a crowd, then you may want to consider skipping it or finding an alternative thing to do.

2. WHEN IN THE PARTY DO YOU WANT THE BOUQUET TOSS TO HAPPEN?

For the bouquet toss, you’ll be asking for everyone to clear the dance floor while it’s happening. So, it’s best not to do it while everyone is out there dancing because it will immediately kill the dance floor.

One option for timing is to schedule it right away after your specialty dances. This way you’re encouraging people out even before dance floor officially opens. With this option, pick a song that will easily transition into a first dance floor song to get everyone up out of their seats.

Other good moments for the bouquet toss are at the beginning or end of each band set. This way the band is just coming back from a break or about to take one, which usually results in a break in the dance floor crowd. However, don’t wait until the very end of the night in case some of your single guests decide to leave before the reception is over.

3. ARE YOU ALSO HAVING A GARTER TOSS?

If you are intending to also have a garter toss then it typically occurs immediately after the bouquet toss. Again, keep your guests in mind if you are choosing to implement the tradition of the “garter toss winner” places the garter on the “bouquet toss winner”. This can be another awkward moment for those winners, especially if they don’t know each other, are related, or have a significant age difference.
